As a child, the one thing you're the most afraid of (aside from losing your family) is not feeling like you belong. It happens all too often in today's society and the worst part about it is that, often times, those children don't feel like they belong until well into adulthood if at all. Lucky for me, however, I was able to find friends that made me feel like I wasn't a complete freak.

Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson. I was born in the middle of nowhere Colorado on November 16th back in 1984. I was born to Cynthia Thompson and... well... I never really knew my father. He left my mother before I was born and we never heard from him again. Nothing about him or his family ever made an appearance in my life until I turned 12. It was then that my mother and I had questions that could only be answered by one person.

This is the stage in a child's life when they're most dependant on fitting in. On being normal. I never got the chance to feel normal. When a kid's biggest fear is going through puberty, my biggest fear was that I was going to change into some wild monster and kill everyone. I'm what the Blackfoot Indians call a "Walker". A Shapshifter if you will. Though, instead of shifting into a wolf I shift into a red fox. Go figure. I get to be all special like this and don't even get to be a big scary wolf.

A year after I turned 12, and a year after hiding what I was from everyone, my mother took me to my father's reservation in Montana. It was there that my grandfather, whom I'd never met, told me what was going on with me. He said it was normal for those chosen, but why I'd been chosen he had no idea. I wasn't a full blooded Blackfoot so there was no plausible explaination for what was happening to me.

That was the first and last time I ever spoke to anyone in my father's side of the family needless to say. After that, my mom and I went back to Colorado and lived in peace for the next six years. I began to get the hang of being a Walker and actually grew to like it. I finished school and when my mother asked me what I was going to do on graduation day I told her straight up: "I think I'm going to go cause some trouble in the world. Mess with a few peoples minds. If you hear anything about a terristic fox, you'll know where I am".

She didn't stop me and I left. Since that day, I've lived in every state at least one. Well all the continental states. I'm not going to Hawaii or Alaska anytime soon. Right now I'm residing in Edmonds, Washington. I liked the state the first time I lived here so I just picked a different city. Not sure how long I'll be here but for the time being I like where I am. I can never tell how long I'll be in one city, so we'll see.

Right now, though, I'm just working to make ends meet and staying out of as much trouble as I can. Unfortunately for me, trouble always seems to find those that aren't looking.

you've got no way of knowing whose side I'm on )
